Widowed Friend

VISITING A WIDOWED FRIEND

Driving the LA freeways is a curse,
Because traffic keeps getting worse,

I visited a friend in Lancaster,
And would do it more often, if I could get there faster.

It seemed far out of reach,
Two hours from Long Beach.

On the way back it took even more time,
But I used the time to rhyme.

My first thought was even if some one would give
Me a free home, In Lancaster I would not live.

My friend wants to move to Washington State,
And would like again to meet a new mate.

She wondered why that did not interest me,
But I told her I prefer to be,

Alone for the rest of my years,
As I already twice shed departing tears.

I reminded her of the saying When you have had the best,
Why bother with the rest.

I told her even though we are alone,
At our age we should be happy to be well, and therefore not moan,
