Easter Bonfire

EASTER BONFIRE

On April 14, Easter Sunday, in 1963,
I got something new to see.

For the first time I was able to admire…
A big Easter Bon Fire.

John drove me there in his Dads car
Because the distance was rather far.

These bonfires were only lit in the East
A religious celebration that ended with a big feast.

The tradition is still alive today…
And becomes each year a bigger display.

Large fires are lit when the sun goes down
And people come from far beyond town.

They used to say…
It was meant to chase the darkness and winter away

But for years they have been leaning
To give the event a different meaning .

Now it is mostly to get the villagers together
And make relationships stronger and better.

After the fire is no longer warm
They all storm…

Into the nearest café…
Where very late they end the day…

And drink gin to stay warm and jolly…
And by-golly…

This tradition can not be wrong
As long as ALLELUIA remains to be their song

This picture was posted by my in law sis
Because this year they did almost miss…

Bringing in the wood for the fire
Because the horses went hay- wire.

But it all ended in the traditional way
With drinking gin and repeating ALLELUIA …loudly and often… in a café.
