Mt. Edna

DAY 75 – SICILY

We docked in Messina…
Then drove two hours along the Sicilian coast to Taormina.

A coastal resort with remnants of Greek and Roman history…
And medieval mystery.

Spectacular distant views and scenery…
But not much greenery…

Trees are bare…
Winter is still in the air.

Destroyed in WW11 and rebuild since..
Inch by inch.

We strolled the main street Corso Umberto,
With a view of Mount Edna -Europe’s tallest most active volcano.
Mt. Edna
We drove up mount Edna on a long winding road…
and viewed Silvestri crater while it snowed.

It was a sensation…
To view the white snow and black lave combination.

The local cuisine and wine lunch was delicious…
And very nutritious.

The guide talked much and fast
“We call ourselves Sicilians first- Europeans second and Italians last “

Farming is labor intensive and done by hand
on the terraced mountain patches of land

The elders like in most places are fearing…
That traditions are disappearing.

The younger generation also here has plans…
To find work without having to dirty their hands.

For theatrical performances people can choose
To visit the third century Greek theater still in use.

A lovely place to stay…
Happy for being here today!
