Immigrant

IMMIGRANT

Some arrived in the late Fifties
Others of us came in the early sixties.

Each had a different reason in mind…
Why we left the Netherlands behind.

But for most it was a given…
We were challenged and driven.

We set out to “make it”
Although some tried to “fake it.”

Soon some excelled…
While others jealousy swelled.

I paid that price…
As soon some friendships turned to ice.

My competition was always with “me”…
Not any of thee.

But soon you were tremendous…
Envious.

I included you in my success
And never forgot your address.

I never tried to “out do”
Any of you.

But I often got a tip
That you manipulated our friendship.

Nothing I could have changed
Your behavior was becoming more estranged.

I am proud of my success…
It was not created to cause you stress.

Some immigrants “make it”
But not all can “take it”

After 50 years…the time left is to precious
For you to remain envious.

The price of immigrant success…
Is that some other immigrants like you less.

But for me it would have been worse…
Ending up with an empty purse.

I close this chapter in my book
While being thankful for the opportunities I had…and took

I am happy to say…
Life is good in USA.

Some “friends” I left behind
But I have many that remain true and kind.
